Author Notes

AAA International League. Harry “The Hat” Walker was the manager, and my neighbor when I was 15 years old. I used to ride to games with his wife and two daughters. Mrs. Walker would leave in the 5th or 6th inning, and we three would ride home with Harry. It was miserable when the Crackers lost, as Harry never said a word, and I was always scared to death of him. At seasons end, he was sitting on his front porch and called me over, and by my name, which I didn’t think he knew. He gave me an autographed piece of paper, which said “To Rick” on it, and a Crackers autographed ball.
